The demolition of the DeAnza High School gymnasium — the first phase of reconstruction at the 53-year-old Richmond campus — is just weeks away, and Dons of all ages are being encouraged to celebrate the original school at a first-ever alumni reunion and dance Saturday.
The newly formed DeAnza Alumni Association extends an invitation to "Bring your lawn chairs, a snack, memories, old and new friends and your families to celebrate all those wonderful memories of 'dear old DeAnza High,' as we used to sing."
Along with picnicking and reminiscing, the afternoon will include a Last Chance Dance in the gym and activities such as volleyball, tours of the school's new, state-of-the-art football field and a chance to see plans for the new DeAnza, projected to open in two or three years.
Tables will be set up in the quad, where attendees can sign up to be on the all-alumni contact list being compiled in part to notify everyone about the dedication ceremonies for the new school. A video of the last "Hello-Goodbye Rally," held June 11, will be shown at the reunion and will be followed by a cheer for the old school; time capsules dating from the original construction will be opened.
Alumni also can consider making a small monetary donation to the school's athletic, drama, art, public service or any other favored program that day.
Saturday's dance in the gym is themed "From Sock Hop to Hip Hop," and its music — provided by
the leadership class — will reflect the many styles that have been popular since DeAnza opened in the fall of 1955.
The area was far less densely settled when the school opened, recalled Karen Ewing Mason, an alumna of the class of 1964 who is helping organize the dance and heads the effort to archive the school's history.
DeAnza, which had an award-winning architectural design, originally opened as a combination middle and high school that served the outlying portion of Richmond and El Sobrante as well as Pinole until the opening of Pinole Valley High School, said Mason, who returned to DeAnza as a teacher for 31 years.
"It's a lot of work, but I have a lot of history here, and it's fun working with the kids," said Mason, who came out of retirement to help when the school had a shortage of teachers this year.

Re: 6/21/08 - Party at the D. A. Gym!!!
Mon, June 23, 2008 - 4:40 AM
It was a fairly small gathering. (It was from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.) People came and went. My brother and I showed up around 6 p.m., as it was just too hot! Saw a couple folks I knew, and finally met someone from the class of '69, whom I have had online contact with for several years now!
The main hall was open, and folks were able to go see the plans for what the school is supposed to look like when it's all rebuilt. (There's *supposed* to be a swimming pool again. Do you think it will actually get put in *this* time?!?!?!? )
I don't think any dancing actually happened, but there was some fun socializing, a couple of free items, and a group photo taken. And there was good music playing.
Also, Garrison Traver ( '69 ) reminded folks about the *All Years* barbecue on August 23rd at Kennedy Grove.
(My brother Kevin and I are going to try to go... )
Oh, and I gave Karen (Ewing) Mason the website address here, so hopefully she'll be showing up soon! -

Re: 6/21/08 - Party at the D. A. Gym!!!
Sun, July 6, 2008 - 11:03 AMI stopped in briefly at the gym party, said hi to a few people I knew, danced on the gym floor, and went back to my cousin's wedding reception that was also happening that day.
I am sad that De Anza is going to be rebuilt. I've always thought it was the best high school in the area architecturally. Mrs. Mason told me that the gym is being torn down now and the classrooms will be torn down in two years after the new school is constructed.
Two years from now will be my thirtieth high school reunion. We are classy, we are cool, we are 80 and we rule!!! Calling all alumni from the Class of 80 - Let's have our 30th reunion at De Anza High and give our high school a great sendoff! If this sounds like something you would like to do please let me know.

Hello, and welcome to tribe! Please post a photo soon, so we can see who you are! (No, I'm not David Tennant, my current avatar. I was just in the mood to use his pic. Oddly enough, my name is *also* Joy! )
